Helpful Kitchen Substitutes


Sometimes when you begin baking or cooking you realize that you are out of a important ingredient. Rather than making a trip to the store, try a substitute. Here is a list of the most commonly used substitutes. I hope it's helpful! :)

When you are out of:

Baking powder, 1 tsp. You can use : 1/4 tsp. baking soda+ 5/8 tsp. cream of tartar

Butter, 1 c. You can use :7/8 c. lard or 1 c. oil
-----------------------------------------------------
Buttermilk, 1 c. You can use: 1 c. yogurt, or 1 c. minus 1 tbsp. milk plus 1tbsp. Lemon juice or white vinegar
-----------------------------------------------------
Unsweetened Chocolate, 1oz. You can use: 3 tbsp. cocoa+ 1 tbsp. butter
-----------------------------------------------------
Semisweet Chocolate, 1 oz. You can use: 3 tbsp. cocoa+1 tbsp. butter+ 3 tbsp. sugar
-----------------------------------------------------
Cornstarch, 1 tbsp. You can use:1 tbsp. Arrowroot or 2 tbsp. flour
-----------------------------------------------------
Heavy Cream, 1 c. You can use:1/3 c. butter+ 3/4c. Milk (for cooking, not whipping)
-----------------------------------------------------
Flour 1 tbsp. (as a thickener) You can use: 1 1/2 tsp. cornstarch, or 2 tsp. quick-cooking tapioca
-----------------------------------------------------
Cake flour, 1 c. sifted You can use: 7/8 c. sifted all– purpose flour
-----------------------------------------------------
Honey, 1 c. (baked dishes only) You can use: 1/14 c. sugar+ 1/4 c. water
-----------------------------------------------------
Whole milk, 1 c. You can use: 1 c. skim milk+ 1/12 tsp. butter
-----------------------------------------------------
Skim milk, 1 c. You can use:1/3 c. Instant nonfat dry milk + 3/4 c. water
-----------------------------------------------------
Peppers, dried You can use: 2 or 3 drops of Tabasco or other hot sauce
-----------------------------------------------------
Sugar, 1 c. You can use: 3/4 c. maple syrup or honey
-----------------------------------------------------
Sour cream, 1 c. You can use: 7/8 c. plain yogurt + 3 tbsp. butter
-----------------------------------------------------
Tomato puree, 1 c. You can use: 1 c. tomato sauce, or 3 ounces tomato paste plus 1/2 c. water
-----------------------------------------------------

Neat! I don't know how many times I have started making something to find that one ingredient is missing, this will be helpful.
